West Virginia G.O.P. : Glorifying Orwellian Policies
Orwellian: Government actions that rely on propaganda, disinformation, and denial of truth to control public life.
In recent weeks, the Republican supermajority has advanced legislation that raises serious concerns about government overreach, political messaging in public institutions, and policies rooted more in ideology than evidence.
Below is a breakdown of bills that reflect three themes: Propaganda, Disinformation, and Denial of Truth.
Propaganda Bills
SB 388 would require the Aitken Bible to be available in all fourth, eighth, and tenth grade public school classrooms. The measure is part of a broader political effort to promote the idea that the United States was founded explicitly as a Christian nation, raising concerns about separation of church and state.
HB 4982 would put the Presidential Fitness Test back in schools, among other measures to “Make West Virginia Healthy,” despite this never being proven to actually promote healthy lifestyles.
HB 4462 would prohibit the sale of federally regulated, safe cell-cultured meat products in West Virginia. The ban appears designed to protect one industry from competition rather than protect consumers.
Disinformation Bills
HB 4198 would require all businesses to use E‑Verify to check employees’ legal status, codifying untrue claims that undocumented immigrants are taking jobs en masse and placing unnecessary burdens on small businesses.
HB 4600, HB 5401, & HB 5219 would impose additional voting restrictions— including requiring ballots to be received by Election Day, creating new hurdles for military families voting overseas, and making a person’s bedroom the controlling factor in determining voter residency. Together, these bills reinforce misleading narratives that undermine confidence in elections and misrepresent how legitimate voting processes work.
HB 4983 would allow for data centers to seek certification without publicly disclosing their water usage or environmental impact. An amendment offered by Del. Evan Hansen (D-Monongalia) requiring transparency was rejected by the Republican supermajority.
Denial of Truth Bills
HB 4413 would prohibit all syringe services programs based on claims they encourage drug use. Public health research shows that these programs instead do the opposite, as well as reducing disease transmission.
HB 4098 would restore jury eligibility, and therefore gun ownership, to individuals with expunged or pardoned convictions, including those pardoned for offenses related to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, an event rooted in the false claim that the 2020 federal election results were illegitimate.
SB 4 would criminalize approaching within 30 feet of a first responder after a verbal warning, preventing citizens and journalists from documenting law enforcement activity (including ICE).
